CrossCare Fibroid Care™

Fibroids and Black women

Fibroids affect women of every background. Research also consistently reports that Black women experience them more often, earlier in life and frequently with a longer wait before diagnosis. This page exists so that nobody is told their symptoms are simply normal.

Fibroids are common — and often diagnosed later in Black women

Research consistently reports higher rates of fibroids, earlier onset and larger fibroids among Black women, alongside longer delays before diagnosis. Knowing this is not a reason for alarm; it is a reason to be heard early.

Heavy bleeding is common, but it should not be dismissed

Periods that soak through protection, last more than a week or cause tiredness and low iron deserve investigation — not reassurance alone.

Hysterectomy is not the only path

Uterus-preserving options exist. If a hysterectomy is the only option you have been offered, asking about alternatives or seeking a second opinion is reasonable and normal.

Questions you can take to your appointment

What type, size and position are my fibroids? Which uterus-preserving options am I eligible for, and why? How would each option affect fertility? What happens if I wait?
