Proton Therapy
Proton therapy uses protons instead of conventional X-rays. Because protons release most of their energy at a set depth, treatment teams may be able to reduce the dose reaching healthy tissue beyond the tumour.
- · Availability depends on tumour type, location, stage and previous treatment
- · Not appropriate for every cancer
- · Requires full pathology and recent imaging for evaluation
Carbon-Ion Radiotherapy
Carbon-ion radiotherapy uses heavier charged particles. Japanese centres have used it for selected tumour types, sometimes where other radiation approaches are considered difficult.
- · Offered by a small number of centres worldwide
- · Strict case selection by the treating Japanese team
- · Previous radiation history is a key factor in evaluation
